The types of distilled spirits can be divided into white distilled spirits and brown distilled spirits according to their color. White distilled spirits include Vodka, Gin, White Rum and White Tequila; Brown distilled spirits include Whisky, Brandy, Rum, Tequila, etc. Distilled Spirits Filtration Processes include barrel char filtration, activated carbon filtration, general particle filtration and guard filtration. Let's take a look at how these filtration processes filter distilled spirits.

Barrel Char Filtration

Barrel char filtration process is usually used in whisky, brandy and other brown distilled spirit aging process, the main purpose is to filter out impurities from the aging of distilled spirits in rubber or wooden barrels. The filtration system typically uses SUS316 High Flow Cartridge Filter Housing and Pleated High Flow PP Cartridges.

Activated Carbon Filtration

The activated carbon filtration process is usually applied to the mixing and dilution process of white distilled spirits such as vodka and gin, and the main purpose is to remove the color and taste of the mixed and diluted white distilled spirits. If the filtration process uses particulate activated carbon for decolorizing and deodorizing treatment, a bagged filtration system will be installed to filter the remaining small activated carbon particles. The filtering system typically uses SUS316 Bag Filter Housings and PP Standard Felt Filter Bags

In addition to the traditional activated carbon filtration process, The Carbon Impregnated Cellulose Cartridges designed to replace granulated activated carbon are also commonly used in the decolorizing and deodorizing process of distilled spirits. The advantage of the new filtration process is that it reduces the filtration steps to intercept the activated carbon particles, shorten the filtration time and save the filtration cost of the whole distilled spirits production process.

General Particle Filtration

General particle filtration is usually used after the blending and dilution process to remove sugar crystals in rum, particles in gin flavoring fluid, particles worn off by machinery and cellular residues of plant extracts. SUS316 Cartridge Filter Housings and Melt Blown Cartridges are generally selected as the filtration system.

Guard Filtration

The guard filtration process is usually applied in front of the distilled spirit filling process and is the last filtration protection process for distilled spirit before filling. Its main purpose is to ensure the high quality of bottled distilled spirits. Sanitary SUS316 Cartridge Filter Housings and PP Pleated Cartridge Filters are generally used in the filtration system.

The distilled spirits filtration process mentioned above should be based on the project specific particle diameter size, water flow rate, operating pressure and other data to choose the appropriate filtration scheme. By the way, Pleated High Flow PP Cartridges, PP Felt Filter Bags, PP Pleated Filter and Melt Blown Cartridges can be used alternatively according to the specific situation.
